Saturn Retailers join NEA’s Read Across America 2006
Saturn retailers across America will be distributing cat-hat posters in lots of 30 for educators who want to celebrate NEA’s Read Across America on and near March 3. With a few careful scissor snips and some well placed tape, the flat poster becomes a three dimensional red and white stove-pipe hat—ala Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. It is the perfect touch for your Read Across America classroom event.
Education association members may visit any Saturn facility starting February 15 to pick up the posters while supplies last. Visit www.saturn.com to find the nearest Saturn retailer. 30 posters per educator will be distributed on a first come first serve basis. Questions? Call the Saturn-UAW Partnership Team at 800-738-1817 option 1, or email teacherposters@aol.com. In addition to Saturn, poster sponsors include the United Auto Workers and Random House.

The NEA Foundation and National Education Association Announce Read Across America Library Books Awards
The NEA Foundation congratulates 36 recipients of the new Read Across America Library Books Awards. The foundation makes these one-time awards on behalf of the National Education Association (NEA), with generous support from Warner Brothers, Inc., as part of the Polar Express Reading Challenge. These $5,000 awards help public schools serving economically disadvantaged students purchase books for school libraries. The selected schools are chronically under-resourced and often struggle to ensure that students have access to quality, up-to-date reading materials.
The award was open to all NEA members who are practicing preK*12 public school teachers or education support professionals, and employed by schools in which at least 40 percent of the students are eligible for the free/reduced-price lunch program.
NEA's Read Across America is the National Education Association's year-round literacy program designed to reach readers of all ages, skills, and interests and build a nation of readers. NEA's Read Across America Day is NEA's signature event, a national celebration of the joy and importance of reading.
In 2004, NEA, Warner Bros. Inc. and Houghton-Mifflin teamed up to create the Polar Express Reading Challenge which asked students around the country to read books in order to raise funds for under-resourced school libraries. The overwhelming response by students around the country resulted in the generous donation of $200,000 by Warner Bros. for the Read Across America Library Book Awards.
The NEA Foundation offers grants and programs that support educators' efforts to close the achievement gaps, increase classroom innovations, salute excellence in education, and provide professional development. Created by the members of the National Education Association in 1969, the foundation is sustained by their continuing contributions, as well as those of dedicated corporate sponsors and committed friends.

This year's theme is NEA's Read Across America: Where it's Hat! It's a multi-hatted, multi-cultural celebration of reading, honoring not only the works of Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, but also books that feature different cultures and languages.
